I’ll be on Mars, well, in Mars, Pennsylvania, starting on Friday (25 July) through Sunday (27 July) for Confluence, at the Sheraton Starpoint.

Here’s my preliminary schedule (*updated to included panel descriptions and add 2 panels):

FRIDAY, 25 July
6pm – Marshall
Is SFWA Still Relevant?
[Panelists: Denise Verrico (m), Sarah Goslee, Elektra Hammond, Christie Meiers]
The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America – SFWA is a professional organization for authors of science fiction, fantasy and related genres. With a stated intent of supporting its members in a multitude of ways, does it manage to keep itself open to the needs of today’s writers, or has it become an exclusive club of snobs?

7pm – Pine
Why I’m a Fan
[Panelists: Elektra Hammond (m), Ken Chiacchia, Alan Katerinsky, Larry Ivkovitch]
We love the genres, whether it’s Science Fiction in all its electronic, beeping, gear-meshing wonder, Fantasy and each magical quest or Horror with every shadow lurking behind an innocent façade. How did we get here and what about it all keeps us?

8pm – Board Room
Reading
[Panelists: me!]
I’ll be reading from “In the Form of a Question,” in which Norse Gods play Jeopardy!. It appears in the parody anthology TV Gods–copies will be for sale in the Huckster’s Room from the Fortress Guys.

SATURDAY, 26 July
5pm – Marshall
Why did Steampunk?
[Panelists: Matt Betts (m), Danielle Ackley-McPhail, Elektra Hammond, Jeff Young]
Lately, it is being recognized as a separate and distinct genre of fiction. Why did it happen, what about it captured the imaginations of so many, what about it continues to gather forward momentum (build up a head of steam?)?

8pm – Pine
SF Series – What’s worth it and what doesn’t make the grade
[Panelists: David Hartwell (m), Eric Leif Davin, Elektra Hammond, Charles Oberndorf]
Not specifically SF — all series are fair game here. Writers have done multiple visits to the same worlds/universes. From John Carter and Tarzan to Game of Thrones, which ones are worth the time and which are a questionable use of paper or digital memory?

9pm – Marshall
Movies as Series – good and bad
[Panelists: Elektra Hammond (m), Michael Arnzen, Ken Chiacchia, Jon Sprunk]
Just as there are novels that are series, there are movies that were series. A discussion of good series, bad series and OMG-I-can’t-believe-there-was-a follow-up-to-that-dog.

9pm – 525
There is a book launch (yes, I know it conflicts with my panel!) for Fortress Publishing’s latest endeavor TV Gods. I’ll be dashing there after the panel is over.

SUNDAY, 27 July
12 noon – Marshall
How do you find the Right books to read? (Needle in a haystack?)
[Panelists: Elektra Hammond (m), Tim Liebe, Jeff Young, Alan Katerinsky]
With all the choices available now, where can you find the right mix of Hard SF and character, how about suspense and break-neck plotting, whimsical fantasy and learning from mistakes? You can’t always trust the back blurbs and sometimes the covers have nothing to do with what’s on the inside. Is there a resource or group you can trust?

1pm – Crawford/Venango
Tom Smith Live!
If you’re looking for me–I’ll be here, listening to the World’s Fastest Filker.

Author Peter J. Wacks just pointed me toward http://storybundle.com/ – an opportunity to pick up a group of epic fantasy ebooks for . . . whatever you choose to pay. Authors include Neil Gaiman, David Farland, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Peter David, and Brandon Sanderson.

There are lots of choices here: how the money is divided among the packager and the authors, whether you’d like some of it to go to charity, which books make up your package. No matter how you slice it, it’s a great deal!

But it’s a limited-time offer, so get ’em while they’re hot!

I spent the last weekend in September at the always fun Baltimore Book Festival, helping sell Danielle Ackley-MdPhail books at the SFWA (Science Fiction Writers of America) tent. Much fun was had by all in attendance.

I did panels with amazing, intelligent folks I am proud to have met: Sarah Pinsker, Kate Milford, Harry Heckel, Philippa Ballantine, Tee Morris, Tiffany Trent, Ellen Datlow, and Richard White–moderated by the awesome Catherine Asaro. I also got to meet and/or generally hang out with Cat Rambo, Rahul Kanakia, Laura Anne Gilman, Brenda Clough, Brandie Tarvin, Walter Greatshell, Don Sakers, Jack McDevitt, Bud Sparhawk, Tom Doyle, Sarah Beth Durst, Alethea Kontis, and Andrew Fox. My dh Mike even came out for the Saturday night meet and greet.

There was fun festival food, delicious low-fat smoothies from Maui Wowi, a lovely lunch out with writer Anatoly Belilovsky, and best of all, lots of visiting time with my host in Baltimore, eluki bes shahar, amazing mentor and incredible writer.

Looking forward to next year.

This weekend is the 17th Annual Baltimore Book Festival, a three-day extravaganza of book-related fun spread over several blocks of downtown Baltimore. Readings, panels, demos, and signings will be taking place, as well as all manner of books, new and used, for sale. Dark Quest Books is handling the book sales for SFWA (Science Fiction Writers of America), who is a program partner for the event this year. I’ll be helping out with the book sales.

I’m also scheduled for two panels, both on Saturday, 29 September at the SFWA tent:

12 noon The Electronic Age
It’s here and it’s booming. A plethora of bonuses come with reading in the electro-optic age, including: eBooks, animation, audio books, and who knows what in the near future. Come hear what’s up in one of biggest developments in publishing.
Panelists include: Kate Milford, Sarah Pinsker, Harry Heckel, Elektra Hammond, Philippa Ballantine

1pm Steampunk and Gaslight: It’s Hot and on Top
Come talk with steampunk and gaslight authors about this immensely popular new genre.
Panelists include: Tee Morris, Tiffany Trent, Ellen Datlow, Richard White, Elektra Hammond

If you’re at the festival, stop by and say “hi.”

I haven’t said a lot about Chicon–probably because, well, 5 days in Chicago, not quite 3 days home, then 2 days judging a cat show in White Rock, British Columbia. I’m still catching up. There were quite a few high points: going to the bar for a nibble that first night and meeting George R.R. Martin, meeting Jim C. Hines just moments after purchasing Libriomancer and getting it signed, meeting Ferrett Steinmetz and having dinner with him, his lovely wife Gini Judd, and Amy Sundberg (and my dh Mike). I did my first ever worldcon panels, and committed to Lonestarcon (Worldcon 2013) next year and supported the Phoenix in 2014 bid for NasFic (and got an awesome Magnus and Loki t-shirt).

And, best of all, thanks to Larry Smith, Bookseller, my latest publishing effort, Galactic Creatures, was on sale in the Worldcon hucksters’ room. I have proof.

The year 2012 actually started the way a new year is supposed to–with champagne, and music, and friends. Of course, it was a bit of a slow start–I’m still limping from the toe surgery I had on the 28th, and I don’t get my stitches out until the 3rd. I’ve been sitting down a lot.

2011 saw a lot more editing work come my way, as well as my first published story. Of course, more editing work means that I’m writing less to keep up with the editing. I need to find a better balance. The year also saw a shift in the balance between the sci-fi/fantasy and cat show worlds. BlueBlaze produced two litters of maine coon kittens (now all sold), and is now showing a havana queen, but on the whole I spent more of my available [weekend] time at conventions or book-related events rather than cat-oriented events. This shift has made me a happier person, and I plan to continue it. I have some [cat show] judging assignments coming up in the next year, and I look forward to them [particularly spending Valentine’s week in Malta], but I am severely curtailing my exhibition-only weekends in favor of sci-fi conventions, book fairs, and steampunk events.

Thanks to my GP sending me back to Physical Therapy, I finally started exercising, and I was doing close to an hour of cardio at a stretch prior to having my toe sliced open. I’m still trying to figure out how to do something, but I fear I need to wait until the stitches come out before either the exercise bike or the treadmill is an option.

In 2012, I want to:
Write more. And get better about putting aside time for it. To help achieve this, I’ve signed up for Jonathan Maberry’s Novel in Nine Months class, starting in mid-January. It’s about an hour-and-a-half drive each way, but only meets physically once a month, and I’ve heard very good things about it. Hopefully that will be the push I need.

Edit more. And perhaps more effectively. I’ve decided it’s time for a refresher–I’m planning on the EFA Advanced Copyediting class, which I haven’t taken yet. In the past I’ve found the online EFA classes to be extremely worthwhile and well worth the cost. The class runs six weeks and starts in late February–I’ll assess at the beginning of the month if I can manage it while taking Jonathan’s class.

Get more organized. I’ve started this, but I need to keep up with it, and refine it. I’m freelancing in enough different directions I need to be certain nothing falls through the cracks. I’m starting to think I need a virtual corkboard–or maybe a real one.

Get back into shape. This is somewhat contingent on the healing of the toe, but I had a pretty good start on it before the surgery slowed me down.

Lose the last blasted fifty pounds. Related to the above getting in shape. I’m tired of being overweight. It’s a bit tricky trying to diet when traveling, but I’ve done it before. I just need to wrap my head around it again. Exercising will help, I think.

De-clutter. Especially the extraneous paperwork. Some of this is part of various ongoing projects to scan and dump old stuff, and some of it is just dumping old stuff that we’ll never look at again anyway. There’s a lot of paperwork that we have no room for, and I’m tired of having it in the way.

Read my way through some of the backlog. And sift through some of the books and donate them. I could read from now until doomsday, and I’d never get through them all . . . it’s time to be merciless and cull the backlog again.

Clean out and organize the craft stuff/sewing stuff/needlework stuff in the guest room so guests will fit in there. ’nuff said

I think that will keep me busy until next year.

I collect bookmarks. Actually, I collect a lot of things (ask me about Whimsiclay ceramic figurines sometime. They’re like potato chips. Or crack). I’ve been hanging on to bookmarks for as long as I can remember–after all, without a bookmark, how do you keep track of where you are in the book/books you’re reading? And I’ve been a voracious reader forever. Aren’t you?

I have bookmarks from every bookstore that graciously tossed one into the bag when I bought books. I have cute, tasseled bookmarks from Barnes & Noble that I just couldn’t resist. I have one that has the One Ring hanging off of it. Most of them have been sequestered in a drawer in an architectural flat-file primarily used to store prints that we just haven’t gotten around to having matted and framed yet (one day, we will have all of our Samurai Cat prints matted and hung–but not today).

Of course, these days everyone with a book to promote has bookmarks with their cover art to hand out, so the collection is . . . excessive. But it still makes me smile. Many of those bookmarks live in my library inside the appropriate books.

When I read, of course, I grab whatever is handy to use as a bookmark: old business cards, vintage baseball cards, etc. And Hit Points.

I have a stock of Hit Points that I use as book marks. They are the size of business cards (approximately) and labeled “1 Hit Point” in various colors, with a number hand-written on the back. They date from the early-to-mid 1980s and the very first live-action role playing (LARPing) games. I participated in several, one at my dorm (Risley) at Cornell that was one of the very first games ever run (I think), one at a Boskone, a time-travel themed game at a Baltimore-area convention, a stand-alone game at a hotel, and “Twilight of the Gods” held at SILicon I.

As I continued to participate, I also shifted geographically: from Ithaca (Cornell) to Endicott & Endwell (for grad school at SUNY-Binghamton), then to the Boston area for gainful employment. Concurrently, the folks running the games, who were based primarily out of the Boston area (Harvard, MIT & friends) formed the Society for Interactive Literature. Although LARPing has continued to grow and evolve, much of its base was formed there and is basically the same. Who knew it would endure so long and become so popular?

Every time I pull out one of those colored cards and use it as a bookmark, I remember the fun from all those years ago. Great job guys!

As part of the ongoing “strip the Palm Desktop” project, I’ve pulled all the important info off my calendar. One of the things I tracked there was what I was reading (lame, I know)–at first just books I worked on, with deadlines, then everything (actually, the new version of readerware has a field for that . . . .). But I’d like it somewhere, stored, so here it is, in all it’s glory: the series I obsessed on, the guilty pleasures, the books I inhale as soon as they come out.

You can also see, if you pay attention, when my thyroid went wonky and I started to spend most of the cold days in bed reading ’cause it was impossible to do anything else with no energy and cold fingers. You can spot when I was sick last year (hospital stay sick), so sick I couldn’t even read. You can tell the days we took long plane rides (three Rogue Angel books in a day!) and when I became a major Scalzi fan.

But mostly, this is just a record for my archives. Go ahead and ignore it. I already know I read a lot–you don’t have to tell me that.

And yes, I finished Ghost Story yesterday. No, I haven’t started A Dance With Dragons yet, mostly because Mike isn’t done with it yet. But soon . . . .
